Norman Dixon

28/07/2008
Norman Dixon, the grand old man of the Press Golfing Society, which is a regular supporter of the charity, celebrated his 90th birthday in style on July 28. He had a round of golf at his home club Royal Mid Surrey followed by lunch with 24 PGS members and friends.

Stormin' Norman, who retired as deputy sports editor of the Daily Express 25 years ago, showed age had not withered him by giving whipper-snappers David Emery and Roger Kelly a tonking over nine holes before retiring to the clubhouse to prepare a Pimms welcome for Bill Bateson who had flown up from Cornwall specially for the occasion.

In all, 10 former captains of the PGS were in attendance and they were joined by current boss Nick Cherrie. On behalf of the PGS, vice president Ian Doran presented Norman with an exclusive, commemorative pack of medallions from Manchester United's Treble triumph of 1999.
