Who Cares Wins is billed as an inspirational event to show the reality of good Care Homes on the theme of Lives Worth Living. Unlike the conventional downbeat view of neglect and mistreatment, the two-hour sequence promises a positive angle which draws an invaluable cross-section through the whole sector.
TV and film star Richard Briers CBE links many of the individual stories together. He presents the view that society needs to see beyond its preoccupation with individualistic existence where any form of community living is seen as an evil. Alongside him, Shadow Health Minister Anne Milton MP brings her own experience as a nurse to bear on her special interests in older people and housing. Also among the special guests is Martin Green, Chief Executive of the English Community Care Association, an umbrella body representing many independent providers of Care Homes.
The stories come from nursing home owners, managers and staff talking about the upside of day-to-day practical realities. From the perspectives of Baby-Boomers and the Sandwich Generation, coping with the future for an older relative. From a young mother whose father has early dementia, and from a man who feared that older life could be anything from a prison to God's Waiting Room, but saw that it didn't need to be either.
Most of the people taking part will be available for interview at the event, and many of their stories appear more fully in a new book, Find The Right Care Home. Written by two prominent workers with long dedication to Care for Older People, Rosemary Hurtley and Julia Burton-Jones, it is published by Age Concern England.
Find The Right Care Home was the inspiration for Who Cares Wins, which is backed by a phalanx of high-profile sponsors and takes place at the Royal Society of Arts in London on October 13, 2008.

Attention!
Pickering House Summer Fayre had a succesful summer fayre.
The weather could have been better but there were sunny intervals between the showers and residents and visitors enjoyed the afternoon.
Stalls included hoop-la, a golf game, skittles and the usual cake stall and tombola.
The band of Reigate 135 Squadron Air Cadets performed and gave a marching display.
Local traders donated great raffle prizes and we have raised over £400 for the Charity . There is still time to buy tickets as the raffle will be running for another 2 weeks: please contact the Dorking Office.
Two ceremonies at an open day in Dorking marked the final stages in the construction of Pickering House..
Canon David Meara, of St Bride's, Fleet Street , dedicated the non-denominational chapel, and Sir Ray Tindle formally opened the bar, which he had generously sponsored with a gift of £25,000.
Afterwards members and guests were entertained to lunch in a marquee on the lawn before being shown around the new care home.
Chairman Robert Warren, thanking Sir Ray for his generosity and the Canon for his service of dedication, said: "We are thrice blessed . Our chapel is dedicated, the bar is officially open - and the weather is perfect."
