New move to make Ball affordable for younger journalists
The star-studded London Press Club Ball 2018 has raised £20,000 for the Journalists’ Charity.
The news comes as preparations and table-bookings get underway for the glittering 2019 event to be held this summer – once again be fully funded and underwritten by our partner, leading media house, SJH Group. www.sjhgroup.com
A major highlight of the 2018 Ball, held at the Victoria & Albert Museum – the ‘V&A’ – in Kensington was the presentation on the night of the inaugural ‘Journalist Laureate’ to former Daily Mail editor and Fleet Street titan Paul Dacre, who attended the event to receive it and to speak.
Of the £20,000 raised for the Journalists’ Charity on the night, £5,000 was from a sum raised by the Ball organisers for Mr Dacre to donate, at his discretion, to a charity of his choosing.
The performance of opera singer Camilla Kerslake, who recently won celebrity Mastermind, also added significantly to the glamour of the evening attended by Sky TV presenter Kay Burley and Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid.
Luxury British car company Bentley, whose chief executive Adrian Hallmark was among the 400 guests, was a leading sponsor and provided limousines for VIP guests.
London Press Club Ball co-chairmen Ray Massey and Robert Jobson, who have overseen the event for the last five years said: ‘The aim of the Ball is to put fun into fund-raising.
‘For one night only the leading lights of the nation’s media – from Fleet Street and broadcasters to news agencies and bloggers – can get together to enjoy themselves in convivial surroundings for a great night of schmoozing and gossip.
‘But behind all the enjoyment is a serious aim to help swell the coffers of the Journalists’ Charity which helps those of our trade who fall on hard times, whether through ill-health, unemployment or sheer bad luck.’
‘The London Press Club Ball exists both to raise the profile of the London Press Club and to help raise much needed funds for the Journalists’ Charity. We want to thank both the London Press Club and SJH Group for making it such a success.’
Journalists’ Charity chairman Jill Palmer said: ‘The London Press Club Ball is a major fundraiser for the Journalists’ Charity and we want to thank both the Ball’s organiser’s, the London Press Club and SJH Group for making it such a success last year.
‘It is not easy to raise money to help journalists who hit rock bottom with financial and/or health problems. But thanks to the generosity of the London Press Club, the SJH Group, other sponsors and supporters we are able to help them back on their feet.
‘We would also like to thank former Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre who, when named the London Press Club Ball’s first ever “Journalist Laureate”, chose the Journalists’ Charity as the recipient of the £5,000 secured by the Ball for him to donate to the charity of his choosing. We hope that this year’s Ball will be an equal success and allow us to provide more grants to hard-hit journalists and enable them to survive until they sort out their lives.’
This year will see some changes to the Ball to help increase the longevity of the event and to encourage other partners to help raise a record amount of money.
The new date for the Ball will be Friday, June 7th at the Grosvenor House on Park Lane. Our partner, SJH Group will be engaging with various media outlets over the next few weeks to make the tables more affordable and accessible for journalists at all levels within the industry.
CEO of SJH Group, Richard Freed said, “We will be looking to make the Ball as inclusive as possible whilst keeping the high standards and prestige of the night at the level it has built up over the past 15 years.
“Last year at the V&A was a real success. This year we are expecting over 1000 guest at Grosvenor House and want to make this ball the most successful one yet.”
The 2019 London Press Club Ball is to take place at Grosvenor House on Friday, June 7th.
