The London Press Club Ball last night hit and surpassed its £100,000 target for The Journalists’ Charity.

Co-Chairmen of the Press Ball Ray Massey and Robert Jobson today hailed the generosity of guests and sponsors at last night’s Press Ball held in the glamorous setting of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London’s Kensington.

“It has been an heroic effort. Our thanks go out to our sponsors, media partners, supporters and all those who attended the Ball, bid in the auction, and dipped into their pockets to back this event to help the Journalists’ Charity. Our thanks also to those who worked hard to bring in vital fund-raising auction prizes. We are deeply grateful. Without all of them them this landmark achievement would not have been possible.” The figure doubles the funds raised in the previous four years.

LBC broadcaster James O’Brien hosted the Ball which was attended by journalists from throughout the industry, including newspaper editors and executives, television presenters and media partners who supported the event despite the tough economy. Among them was Newcastle United owner and Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley who turned out to support the event.

Media organisations attending included the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, the Telegraph, and Mirror groups, The Times, Sun, Guardian, London Evening Standard and Independent, Bloomberg, Sky TV, Press Association, and Cision.

The evening enjoyed lively entertainment by the brilliant cast of The London Cabaret Club and talented singer Georgia Crandon.

Journalists’ Charity chairman Jill Palmer thanked everyone for “digging deep” in supporting the Ball and raising funds to help journalists who had fallen on hard times.

London Press Club chairman Doug Wills said today: “Once again everyone in the industry came together to give magnificent support to the Journalists’ charity while celebrating the best of journalism. It was a terrific event, combining a great night out and ensuring that vital work of the charity can continue. I would like to pay tribute to Ray Massey, Rob Jobson and all on their committee and the Press Club for the enormous amount of time, energy and passion that they give to organising the Ball. In particular, I would like to thank the sponsors and media companies for supporting the event. This wonderful Press institution and the vitally-needed funds it raises is only possible thanks to their support.”

Qatar Airways hosted the initial welcome reception, and The London Cabaret Club providing the night’s entertainment.

Other major sponsors included: the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), which is transforming this city’s traditional Black Cab into a ‘green’ taxi for the 21st century; and the independent international emissions testing consortium, AIR.

easyJet sponsored the raffle with their boarding-car style tickets and donated prizes.

Online auction experts Givergy ran the bidding.

‘Heads and tails’ sponsor, British Airways broke the ice with a firm-favourite parlour game with the winning prize of two business class ticket to New York.

Helping to create a relaxed ambience was wine supplier, Berry Bros. & Rudd with the continued support of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA).

The London Press Club Ball was supported by vital media partners: dmg media; NewsUK; and the Telegraph Media Group.

Supporters included Jaguar Land Rover, Good Relations, Brunswick, Brittany Ferries, APB and many more.

Thank also go to Ball Patron, Lord Black of Brentwood who began the event with an introduction speech and the Reverend Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride’s in Fleet Street, who gave one of her wonderfully witty Graces.
